Kiriko was raised in Kanezaka and has been trained in both the way of the Miko, courtesy of her grandmother, and the way of the Shinobu, under her mother's tutelage. She bonded with the Fox Spirit when she was young and although she knew her family wanted her to choose a path to follow, she chose to walk both, becoming both a healer and a warrior. Someone who respects tradition yet believes that there is a place for innovation and modern thinking. A blend between the old and the new.After the fall of the Shimada Clan, the Hashimoto Clan took their turf and abducted Kiriko's father to force him into forging blades for them. Visitations to his family were allowed at times and it was only seven years after his abduction that he managed to send Kiriko a blade of her own. She was never made aware of the situation, until she moved in with her grandmother for her own safety and began using the old woman's last name. There, she learned about everything that had happened with her parents and about the Hashimoto Clan's wrongdoings.Upon the death of her grandmother, Kiriko returned home to deal with the Hashimoto Clan. She became the caretaker of the Tetsuzan Shrine and got her own apartment, where she is regularly visited by her mother. Her relationship with her mother is strained as her mother worries about the apartment block she's living in, her presence on Kanezaka's dangerous streets, her concerning eating habits, and the fact that she had stopped training with her mother. Kiriko insists that she's protected by Fox Spirit.One day, there was an incident within her apartment building that involved some Hashimoto thugs harassing her dear neighbors. While her mother was busy, Kiriko snuck out of her apartment to deal with the Hashimoto using her kunai and martial arts prowess. However, one of the thugs fired a gun and severely harmed her elderly neighbor. Through the use of a healing ofuda, Kiriko revived him, and snapped at the Hashimoto, calling forth the powers of the Fox Spirit to assert that Kanezaka is under her protection. The thugs retreated under the combined force of Kiriko's supernatural abilities and her neighbors' rage. When Kiriko returned to her apartment, she found out her mother had witnessed everything. She agreed to move in with her mother, Asa, and the pair made up. It was a tearful and healing moment, as Asa said that Kiriko's grandmother would have been so proud of her, and that she views her daughter as a superhero.Aside from reuniting with her mother, Kiriko also became involved with other people her age when she returned to Kanezaka. Namely, Ryōta, Nobuto, and Sakura. They wanted to strike back against the Hashimoto by destroying an arms shipment. Kiriko wanted to push the crates into the water, but Ryōta wanted to destroy them instead using fireworks. Kiriko, remembering an old story that the late head of the Shimada Clan once told her, warned him that doing that could destroy the whole port. Their actions would show the world who they really were. They should show that they're strong, but not give the people another reason to be afraid. Finally coming to agreement, the four friends decided to form the Yōkai. Like ghosts and spirits of old, they would frighten the Hashimoto and defeat them themselves. Then she would be able to free her father. Kiriko sensed the Fox Spirit's approval with the group's decision. And so, they tossed the guns into the water and let off fireworks to celebrate.
